We just got back from a great youth javelina hunt in unit 23, AZ. The desert is so much fun to hunt at this time of year. A special thanks to Jason Jones and family for helping find a "piggy" area. Monica took her pig with one shot at 104 yards. Great job baby!

It sure has been a long day. Up at the crack of dawn. Headed up to the burn. Glassed up this buck. Made a stalk. Made a good shot. Tracked and found the buck. Packed the buck back to the truck. Broke camp. Headed home (3 hour drive). Stopped in Springerville to drop my meat off at the processor (Rusty's Meat Shop). Headed home to pick up the kids and get them ready for school tomorrow (Wife's out of town). Just sat down to update the blog. What a day!
Self-Guided hunting is what I do. I had 3 days to hunt in a marginal unit in another state. Sometimes I go home with meat, but not always. This time I was blessed with an incredible opportunity based on the research and preplanning that was made. I made it back over to the burn for the last 15 minutes of light. Spotted 3 bucks with 2 of them bigger than anything I have seen. One was a small 3 point and the other a small 4 point. Definitely not trophy bucks but bigger than anything I have seen. Will try to find them in the morning. Time for some dinner and a little shut eye.

Low Country A Bust!

Spent most of the mid part of the day scouting the low country. Saw a ton of camps and not much for deer sign. Hiked into a couple of remote waterholes and did'nt see many fresh tracks. Made a big loop in the truck with no deer spotted. Guess I should head back to my burn.... Might be able to get there for the last little bit of light.

2nd Day of the Hunt

This morning was beautful! I woke up to a sliver of a moon. Headed back up to the burn area on Sedgewick and didn't see anything. Decided to head to some lower country where there is an old burn in the pinions. Found 3 small bucks together with the largest being a funky looking 3 point. The other two were 2x1's. One was in velvet and the other was hard horned. On the drive back to camp I saw another 2x1. These small bucks will be in trouble tomorrow. Not sure what to do this evening. Met a guy on the road that said a 9x11 was hit on the road last night on Hwy 53. Maybe I should go hunt the low country and look for a bomber!!!! May not see anything but that's usually where you find the big ones...

Back at the hidden valley this morning looking for that buck. Couldn't find him for a while so we kept moving along the mountain top glassing below us. Came up to this rock outcropping and thought I saw a deer below me. Looked through the glass and it is the small herd of antelope that we have been looking for. They are in the pines acting like mule deer. I have a perfect shot at the buck I am looking for..... 227 yards...

We explored all the recommended areas from my research and we saw 18 bucks. All were average bucks. This evening we found a buck that seems to be a little longer than the others so we will hunt him in the morning. We found him in this little hidden valley. Most hunters seem to be overlooking it. What a great day in the woods!

I think I was in my twenties before I shot my first Coues. My daughter shot her first deer on a leftover Nov. tag down in unit 34a. Well, I can honestly say I did Hunt Hard! No bucks seen today. Sat the burn/saddle where I saw the big buck last night and only saw a doe. Watched some road hunters below me drive down the road a half mile and heard a shot. Hope is wasn`t the big one. Oh well. Another beautiful day in God`s creation. Can`t wait until the next one...

Finally saw a deer. I can't believe it! 6.5 miles (according to the GPS) today hitting the ridges and I finally see a buck right before sunset. Settled the crosshairs on him at 108 yards but let him walk. I still have the whole weekend! Back to the burn tomorrow to glass at daybreak.

What an incredible hunt! The pack out was a back breaker! 120 pound pack and I had to piggyback carrying my buck and my gear out over 5 miles in extremely tough terrain! Each time I put my hands on this velvet rack, it is worth it (while I am popping Tylenol)! Long drive home but I have a smile on my face. Great hunt!

Well, I made a great stalk and shot. My hunt is over.... well, the fun part anyway. Still have a ton of work to do. I am so glad I passed that 170 buck earlier in the hunt. NEW MEXICO Archery Antelope Hunt

NEW MEXICO Unit 13, Archery Antelope - An so it begins... Tomorrow I am heading off to New Mexico to chase speed goats with a bow. It is a self-guided hunt and I have been really looking forward to it. You can follow along as I update this blog from the field with a play-by-play of my self-guided hunt. I will be hunting antelope in unit 13, New Mexico. Unit 13 is located to the south and southeast of Datil, NM. It is an archery only unit in the public draw and I have hunted it before. I had a tag in the unit back in 2006 and my buddy Chris had the tag in 2008. Both hunts were successful and I am hoping that this hunt is just as much fun. I have two good buddies coming out to go with me, Jason Jones and Greg Lewis. We are going to try some decoying on this trip because Greg has had a lot of success with it. We have antelope decoys, cow decoys, blinds, and a variety of other tools in our arsenal that we might try on this hunt. It should be a blast!!!! Tomorrow (Friday) I am going to head out early to take a look around the unit and find out where we are going to focus our efforts. It is a HUGE unit and encompasses most of the 16's units (big game units) in New Mexico. There is a lot of public land with a bunch of private mixed throughout. I am going to run my mapping software in my truck to make sure we know where we are in the unit. I am going to meet Greg and Jason in Datil tomorrow evening. Hopefully, I will have some reports of some big bucks we are going to chase on Saturday. Keep checking back to follow along....

Here is another great buck harvested on the San Carlos Reservation of Arizona. Brandon McDermott shot this buck with his rifle at 300 yards on a guided hunt. Our own pro staffer, Dewey Wesley, showed the guides the area where this buck was harvested. Dewey is the guy to talk to if you want to find big bucks on the San Carlos!

On November 30th, 2009 (Opening day of Ohio’s gun season), 39-year-old software developer Brian Stephens dropped this 18-point colossus at 80 yards with his .50 caliber T/C muzzleloader. This enormous buck should shatter the Buckeye State’s non-typical muzzleloader record and will almost certainly set the new mark for whitetail beam length. What an incredible Self-Guided hunt!

White Mountain Apache Reservation MONSTER Coues!!!!

Well, I guess the White Mountain Apache Reservation had to "one-up" the San Carlos by producing a buck like this.... Green score gross for this buck is in the 150's if you can believe it. A friend of mine held this rack and said that "the bases are as thick as an elk's" and that is was "the biggest mass he has ever seen on a coues deer". He has held the world record coues so he knows what he is talking about. Congratulations to this lucky hunter. That is a buck of a lifetime!!!!

Mark Milam drew a late season rifle tag in Arizona's unit 27 for Coues deer. He and his brother spent over 14 days in the field looking for a trophy buck. Yesterday, Mark connected with a great one. Just goes to show you.... time in the field pays off for self-guided hunters. Congratulations Mark!

AZ Regs for Elk & Pronghorn Are Now Available!

Arizona hunt regulations for Elk & Pronghorn are now available via the department website. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/documents/ElkAntelope.pdf. Time to start thinking about hunts for next year. Draw deadline is February 9th, 2010 with the correction period deadline falling on January 21st, 2010. There is still no online application process and you must still front all application, license, and tag fees with your applications. I will be posting our hunt recommendations in a couple of weeks... Good luck on the draw!!!!

ABA Fights for Arizona Bowhunters!

Arizona bowhunters can thank the Arizona Bowhunting Association for going to bat for them with the Arizona Game & Fish Department. The ABA has been lobbying the G&F Dept. for two years to drop the archery deer draw in all units except the Kaibab and the strip. When the Department implemented the draw in Units 1, 3a, 3c, 7, and 12a we lost 10% of the archery deer hunters in the state. That was 2,411 fewer Bowhunters and the harvest increased by 9 deer the first year the draw was implemented. It was very clear that the draw for archery deer did not achieve the goals of the department. Because of the ABA's lobbying effort, everything south of the Colorado River will again be over the counter for archery deer in 2010. The Kaibab and the strip is a special unit with need for closer management, therefore it will remain a draw. If you are a bowhunter in AZ, you should be a member of the ABA. Mondo muzzleloader ram. Just got this pict from Jed Larson. After helping Shon with his ram, Shane and Jed went to check on another tag holder in 44b north. Don`t know the hunters name yet, but check out this incredible 176 inch ram he harvested with a smokepole. WOW!!!
